Through [skillful and godly] wisdom a house [a life, a home, a family] is built,
And by understanding it is established [on a sound and good foundation],
And by knowledge its rooms are filled With all precious and pleasant riches.
New Year – Same God
Solomon was known as the wisest man who ever lived, because he asked for wisdom and God gave it to him. When we think of building of a house, we may think of what color do we want the cabinets, what sink do we want, how many bedrooms, etc. All of that is good, but initially a blueprint has to be laid out of the foundation, in order to clearly define the physical dimensions of the home.
Solomon tells us in the first part of verse 3, “Through wisdom a house is built…” The blueprint for us building our foundation is through Jesus Christ and His Word. By establishing that first, we will be on a solid, good and firm foundation. Jesus confirmed building our life on him in Matthew 7:24-25. Listen to what He said, “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.” When the foundation is solid, then everything else can be added into the house.
Verse 4 says, “And by knowledge its rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” All the things that are important to us are inside our home, our life, our marriage, our family, etc. We protect the people and valuable things in our home with locks and alarms. We protect our life, marriage and family by staying rooted in the Word of God and what we allow our eyes to see, what our ears listen to (even who we listen to) and what we do. I love how Solomon tells us how to be wise by fearing the Lord in Proverbs and Jesus confirms how to be wise by listening and following His teaching in Matthew.
Spend some time today looking at the blueprint of your life, home, family, etc. Who is the foundation built on? What is precious on the inside of your foundation? If there are any cracks in any of the foundations of your life, take them to the Lord and let Him mend them or heal them. Click here to listen to I’m Building This House on the Rock
