Fast, Humble Yourself Before the Lord and Pray

May 3, 2023

21 And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God.
We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled.23 So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayer.
Ezra 8:21,23

New Year – Same God

I’m sorry about not sending a devotional yesterday; I couldn’t get YouVersion to download the image.

So, today we’re going to explore Ezra and what he did before he traveled. It’s so beautiful. He gave orders to the people to fast and humble themselves before God. When fasting, we seek God at greater levels, which in return humbles us to His way not ours. I left a verse out of the image – verse 22.

Verse 22 talks about Ezra’s humanness to me. He basically says that He was afraid to ask the king for charioteers for protection. So what did he do instead? Look at verse 23 on the image. He and the people prayed God would give them a safe journey, “protect” them, their children and everything that they had with them as they traveled. Do you see how the fasting and humbling of hearts, turned Ezra’s prayer for the Lord to protect him and the people…not man? That was fascinating to me. There’s something that happens when we fast, humble ourselves before the Lord and earnestly pray that can’t be explained in a human way.

Look at the last part of verse 23, “and he heard our prayer.” Oh I just love that so much!! I encourage you to fast, humble yourself before the Lord and pray. The results – God hears our prayer.

It’s a new year, but He’s the Same God of Ezra and of you.

Have a blessed day!
