Don’t you know that ADONAI, God of Israel,
has given kingship over Israel to David forever—to him and his sons by a covenant of salt?
2 Chronicles 13:5 TLV
New Year – Same God
Happy Monday! What a great verse to open our week with. Have you just glossed over this verse before in 2 Chronicles 13? What is a covenant of salt? Let’s unpack this together and learn what it is. The Lord made an everlasting covenant of salt with David in 2 Samuel 7:11-16, that his kingdom would endure forever. Salt was symbolic of preservation, and here permanence. Due to the time period David lived in, he understood what a covenant of salt was. If you made a covenant of salt with someone, each party would take a pinch of salt from their pouch and put it in the other party’s pouch. Jesus was from the line of David. Therefore, He fulfilled the covenant of salt with God! One day, he will return to the Mount of Olives, which is in Jerusalem – the capital of Israel and reign forever (“Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices shouting in heaven: The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.” Revelation 11:15 NLT). Because you’ve placed your faith in Jesus, His covenant with you is like the covenant of salt with God and David. It is permanent and preserved. Side note, salt does not burn in a fire. Regardless of the fiery trials of life, you will not be burned (…“When you walk through fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you.” Isaiah 43:2 AMP). Thank God today for His covenant of salt with David; our Lord will reign forever! It’s a new year, but He’s the same God of David and you.
